The other day, I was making a salad. I got all of the salad stuff from the pantry and fridge. After I was done, I put everything back where it belonged, or so I thought. The next day, my husband couldn’t find the cheese in the fridge, where I thought it was… where I said it was. Of course, I’d put it in the pantry by mistake. I was moving so fast, I didn’t take the time to pause and think about what I was doing.
As leaders, we often have days like this. We get so focused on one thing, we don’t actually pay attention to the other things going on around us. Sure, we might not forget something entirely. But when leading on autopilot, we miss growth and development opportunities for ourselves and our team.
A Shift in Our Focus
Mindful leadership isn’t a new concept for us or our clients. We’ve spent the last 6 years with an intense focus on helping leaders communicate more effectively with their teams, peers, and leaders. Centering mindful communication as the driver of leadership success is a sharpening and refining of that focus.
With Lead the Moment as our guiding philosophy, our improved frameworks and tools will help leaders implement more mindful communication for more intentional, effective leadership.
- Moving from Reactivity to Proactivity
- Understanding the “Why” Behind Communication and Conflict Styles
- Planning for More Effective Communication Based on the Working Relationship
- Using Workable Systems to Communicate and Lead More Confidently
.
Outcomes like these happen one moment at a time. We lead the moment when we understand what’s needed and act accordingly. Communication determines leaders’ success: that’s our approach. And it’s an approach you can use every day, starting right now.
5 Paths to Communication Mastery
After decades of working with leaders, we’ve found 5 paths to communication mastery and empowered leadership.
| With Ourselves | With Our Teams | With Our Peers | With Our Leaders | With Our Customers |
| Intrapersonal communication helps us understand what drives us. | Intra-team communication equips our team to succeed. | Cross-functional collaboration realizes shared goals. | Skillful upward communication transforms organizations. | When our customers understand our value, they take action. |
Successful Communication Needs Orientation
Considering these principles while reading a blog or newsletter is one thing, but what happens during your next high-stakes meeting, or before your next one-on-one? Each conversation moves leaders closer to (or farther from) their goals. Accurate orientation is crucial to staying on course.

We use a compass to illustrate how to lead the moment because it’s an intuitive way for leaders to consider the question Who am I communicating with right now? Knowing where or to whom your communication is going shapes your response and determines your approach.
Begin Within
Intrapersonal communication is at the center of the compass. Your self-awareness, your mindset, your emotional regulation, your decision-making style, your conflict response: it all impacts how (or if) you communicate with others in a given moment.
- Let me ground and center myself (Center) based on who I’m communicating with (N, S, E, W):
- What do I need to be aware of?
- What should my mindset be?
- How do I need to regulate before, during, and after this conversation?
- How might considering my audience (colleagues, my leaders, direct reports, customers, or someone on another team) shape my response?
In short: how do I communicate most effectively at this moment, given who I’m communicating with?
Let’s say you’re stopped in the hallway by someone on your team. They’re frustrated, stuck, and overwhelmed. Progress has ground to a halt on their most important project, and they’re insisting their teammate is to blame for the bottleneck.
Instead of reacting immediately, what if you could take a moment to regulate your breathing and consider what you’ve heard?
Yes, your teammate is frustrated with their colleague, and yes, that’s impacting progress.
But is there more?
- Are both teammates feeling heard?
- Do they both have the resources and support they need to meet project goals?
- What would leadership in this moment look like?
- How could you communicate that leadership, and how might that shape what happens next?
That’s the heart of Lead the Moment, and it has tremendous potential to empower leaders and teams when integrated into their everyday tasks and workplace culture.
The Next Moment Is On Its Way
You don’t have to overhaul your entire leadership approach to improve outcomes quickly. All it takes is commitment to mindful communication from one moment to the next.
That’s how mastery actually works. Not in a single training or a breakthrough insight, but in the accumulated weight of small, intentional choices. Pause. Align. Act. Repeat… until it becomes second nature for you, your team, and your organization.
If you’ve been looking for a way to lead with intention from moment to moment, we’d love to hear from you. Let’s have a conversation that can keep you moving forward.
Let’s talk about where communication is working in your organization, where it isn’t, and what’s possible when leaders start leading the moment.
